Discovering this man's music from thirty years ago, has definitely been the sound of the year for me. The one I've found myself returning to time and again, as I discover yet more lost beauties. Most of his albums from the nineties do not exist on the market as downloads, but you can still find, ever so slightly pricey CD versions. There is a very good compilation Encyclopedia of Arto, which was my basic introduction to this man's art and electro inflected bossa nova.
I recently obtained the original CD version of the album Prize, an album from 1999. And nestled penultimately is this track Interior Life, slightly more grundgy around the edges than is usual, it grinds along on a rougher cut chugging rhythm section, with sax breaks and spacey segues, and one bit that sounds like a vocal line fed through a malfunctioning amp. Plus, of course, his usual laid back choppy phrased lyrics that are an Arto feature. It starts off sounding quite pared back but slowly builds up its rhythmic complexity throughout the song, until it is fair rollicking along by the end. Oh, this music is just bliss for me.
